History of Diyasaru Park
Diyasaru Park, formerly known as Biodiversity Study Park, Thalawathugoda, is a 60-acre urban
wetland park in Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte, Sri Lanka. The park was originally a paddy field, but
was converted into a wetland after dredged material from the construction of Parliament Lake
was deposited on the land in the late 1970s.
During the flood in 2010, the government initiated a project to reconstruct and modify the area as
a wetland. The land was divided into several small islands and artificial canals were made. The
park premises now serve as a flood detention area by absorbing flood water during heavy storms
and reducing inundation of the parliament area.
The park was named Diyasaru, which means “Rich in water” in Sinhala, to reflect its unique
ecosystem. The park is home to a wide variety of plants and animals, including many endangered
and endemic species. It is also a popular spot for birdwatching, with over 50 species of migratory
birds recorded in the park
